Upcoming Workshop: Sept. 11th-Oct. 9

Introduction to the Vedic Scriptures (NAMA-PACE Approved)

This workshop consisting of five 90-minute lectures explores the philosophical and spiritual foundation of the ancient Vedic scriptures. The Vedas are the earliest available record on India’s spiritual past. For this reason, they assume prominence within the extensive body of Vedic and Hindu literature. There are four Vedas: the Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda. In this Introduction series, the significance of each Veda is explored.

The evolution of spiritual thought and practice as mapped against the chronology of India’s scriptures is the topic of the first session. Participants are provided a global perspective on the development over time of India’s various spiritual paths.

The second and third sessions are dedicated to the Rigveda (“Knowledge of the Sacred Mantra”). Its spiritual message to mankind as revealed by the ancient Rishis are presented, along with the Vedic Godheads and their roles in the spiritual quest of the Seeker. Lord Soma, the Godhead of Delight and subject matter of the Samaveda, is included in this discussion.

Roughy 2000 years later, we have the Yajurveda, or “Knowledge of the Sacrifice”. Supporting this Veda are volumes of Brahmanic texts detailing the ritual and sacred formulas of the outer Vedic sacrifices or yajnas. The spiritual boons of the major sacrifices, such as the Soma Sacrifice and New and Full Moon Sacrifices, are divulged.

Lastly, and of utmost interest to the practitioner of Ayurveda, is the Atharvaveda. This Veda comprises India’s first scripture dedicated to health and illness and is the forerunner to the much later classical Ayurvedic texts. Its contents include mantras or prayers for health and happiness as well as remedies for physical, mental-emotional and spiritual diseases. We will explore the earliest notion of health and healing and discuss many of the mantras used for healing.
